How to Get Your Doors and Windows Ready for Winter

With winter around the corner, it’s important to do what you can to prepare your home for the colder months. Fortunately, it’s not a gargantuan task. You just need to do a few specific things to winterize your home, starting with your doors and custom windows.

Inspect All Your Doors and Windows

Be thorough, checking for cracks or other kinds of damage in the frames and glass.

Remove screens

During the other seasons, door and replacement window screens are great for filtering out debris and blocking insects from entering your home while allowing you to maintain natural ventilation. During winter, however, screens can lead to trapped snow or ice between, which can lead to potential warping or bowing due to the buildup.

Caulk Where Needed

If your doors and windows are drafty, consider caulking around them, ensuring you have sufficient weatherstripping to prevent indoor heat from getting out.

Replace Broken Doors and Windows

The best way to make sure your doors and windows can keep up with the challenges of winter season is to get new ones when yours are broken or damaged. It might sound inconvenient to schedule a replacement project during winter but it can keep your home energy-efficient throughout the season and beyond, proving it is a worthy investment. You also don’t have to worry about installations during winter as long as you are working with a reputable window contractor.
