How Cold Weather Affects Windows and Doors

If there’s one season in which keeping an eye on your home’s windows and doors is imperative, it’s winter. The drastic drop in temperatures, coupled with occasional snowstorms, can adversely affect their year-round performance. If not taken care of, expect your windows and doors to deteriorate early in their lifespan and compromise your home’s comfort and energy efficiency.

In today’s blog, local window contractor Renewal by Andersen® of Montana explains how winter’s frigid temperatures and harsh weather affects windows and doors.

Hardware Failure

Exposure to cold weather can cause the latches, handles, hinges, and other mechanisms of windows and doors to easily get damaged. This is especially true for those with complex opening mechanisms, including casement windows. Ice can form on these components, making windows and doors difficult to operate.

Shrinking and Warping

If you have wood windows and doors, expect the material to undergo significant physical changes due to its exposure to temperature fluctuations and moisture brought about by winter weather. Apart from the frames shrinking under extreme cold, too much indoor humidity can lead to the wood warping and bowing unfavorably. If you plan to replace old windows, consider Renewal by Andersen’s Fibrex® frame windows, which are known to withstand cold weather conditions.

Condensation

Winter condensation is a sign that your windows are working properly and have good levels of energy efficiency. This happens due to warm, humid air unable to escape outdoors. Minimize indoor humidity this winter by using a dehumidifier or turning on the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom.
